Week 14: Jan Herrington
This week we are pleased to welcome Jan Herrington, who is a Professor in Education at Murdoch University in Perth Western Australia. Jan’s work involves research and teaching in the undergraduate and post-graduate programs in the School of Education.

Jan’s current research focuses on the design of effective web-based learning environments for higher education and the use of authentic contexts and tasks as a central focus for web-based delivery of courses (see here). She is also researching other ICT–related areas such as computer games in early childhood, authentic learning in museums, mobile learning (see here) and design-based research. week14

Authentic learning is not - contrary to popular opinion - performed in the real world in excursions, internships and practicums and the like. It is basically an approach to teaching and learning that is used within a classroom or educational institution. There is no requirement to venture out in the traffic and weather! It is designed to give students opportunities to think and act like professionals but in a learning or training context. Read the full week14 article.
