End of Week 3

It's the end of week 3 in the #change11 course.

If you just joined recently - perhaps in the last two weeks - you may be feeling a little lost. Not to worry: this is your reset button.

- First, because you probably missed it, Go to the Week 1 Orientation materials over the weekend and get your bearings.

- Second, after looking around this website, go to the Web-Based Activities page and check out the activities offered by participants around the web (and remember, if you are hosting an activity, send a note to stephen@downes.ca so we can add your activity to this page).

- Third, each week in this course is stand-alone. So, starting on Monday, start over. It's a fresh new week, a fresh new topic, and you are starting on the same footing as everyone else.

Have fun, and we'll see you Monday. [Comment]

Power of Video
George, Educational Technology - Insights
Had two "learning" tasks yesterday and it was interesting to compare them.Firstly, I had registered on the webinar "Delivering Your Message Online with the Power of Video and the Ease of EduVision", which was due live at mid-day Central American time. I waited and waited, with the window for GoToMeeting stating "waiting for organizer". I Skyped the telephone number directly in case there were internet problems but got the recorded voice telling me that the webinar will start shortly. Eventually,.... Frustrated with the #change11 RSS feed. Technical difficulties
nando, EdGeek #change11
I feel like I'm the only one having this problem, but it can't be. It's annoying and hinders my participation in the course. Us techies sometimes dismiss technical difficulties, but they can be a real obstacle. My current problem is that the participants blogs RSS has some serious problems that haven't been addressed: I read the feed through Google reader and get a snippet of the test in each blog. When I find something I want to read fully, I can't. I .... [Link] Fri, 30 Sep 2011 06:41:48 PDT [Comment]

#Change11 : MOOCs in Higher Education
gbl55, Connection not Content
Much has been written about networked learning in general theoretical terms but much less on its applicability to specific learning situations in the real education world. Doubtless there are fundamental principles at work in all types of learning situations but current learning theory does not provide much in the way of detailed guides for all [...] [Link] Fri, 30 Sep 2011 10:37:26 +0000 [Comment]

#change11. Week 3. Martin Weller - Digital Scholarship
Luis Rafael Amario, Learning & SharingChange
This Change11 week 3 is concerned with the theme of digital scholarship. If you're not sure what that means, then don't worry, we'll explore that in the next section, but a rough definition might be 'changes in academic practice as a result of new technology'. Making Change11 My Own
Jane Wilde in RL/Esme Qunhua in SL, Teaching and Learning in Virtual Words
Dave, George and Stephen have emphasized that one of the defining characteristics of a MOOC is the source of the goals. While the instructors/facilitators have a plan, (and personal goals) they do not determine the learning goals for the course. Each participant set her own goals. I think this is not just rhetoric. Not a variation on the "learner centered" model. MOOC and open learning in general has the potential to redefine what we mean by learning. I imagine that for some the goals may be .... Digital Scholarship - the coming of age of open sources and resources #change11
George, Educational Technology - Insights
(My notes from Week 3 of the Change11 MOOC)Martin Weller's talk on Change11 defined the four areas of digital scholarship that he considers in his book:DiscoveryIntegrationApplicationTeaching(as the Boyer view of scholarship). He concentrates on one ( Discovery/Research ) in this Change11 presentation, very much geared to university level, of course. Nevertheless there is much that applies to all learning/teaching and to schools as well. In his book (The Digital Scholar: How Technology is .... 2011-09-29T16:28:00.000-06:00 [Comment]

My own grand experiment...
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
Despite the fact that I am technically a digital native (BS and meaningless as this term might be) I still cling to paper - perhaps because it's cheap and (up until recently) freely available.  With a plethora of academic articles piling up, and eBooks to read (granted, most are public domain like the Divine Comedy and The Prince), I thought I would shed my reliance on paper this semester and go paper free as much as possible.I am working on a couple of papers, one solo and one .... Reflections on "interdisciplinary" and blogs
J Lynn Routh, Routh Truth
I've been reluctant to post again because I'm having a hard time focusing on the subject: Technology and Change in Education! I have so many CHANGES going on in my life: marriage, new household, aging parent depending on me, new project ideas swimming around inside my head, in-law issues, cleaning up old stuff, renewing neglected relationships, planning for an uncertain future, etc. etc. But now, to the subject at hand.Quoting Chapter 6 in Weller  "we can see .... A Junior Academic’s Take on Digital Scholarship
chris, Chris Teplovs, Ph.D.
I'd like to offer my perspective as a junior academic, who is in the process of applying for early career positions, on Martin Weller's recent and excellent talk on Digital Scholarship. (The talk starts about 20 minutes into the recording.) Deep down I believe in the open, networked, digital scholarship that Martin describes.  The question [...] [Link] Thu, 29 Sep 2011 17:02:30 +0000 [Comment]

Abundance in the workplace
brainysmurf1234, Connecting the dots
I am reflecting on Martin Weller's A pedagogy of abundance as shared in #change11 this week and wondering what it looks like in the workplace.  Consider a typical organization in which career ambitions were (are) realized through the power of withholding information, of being the 'go to' person who can make [...] [Link] Thu, 29 Sep 2011 14:48:32 +0000 [Comment]

#Change11: Setting my learning expectations and goals. Agile lurking.

Is Learning The New Coffee.
Irena White, 80 - Neoteny, September 29, 2011.

Hi Tony Thank you for drawing together all these 'threads' that are weaving themselves into the fabric of next generation teaching and learning Down Under. So good to see the prophetic Cluetrain Manifesto 'pull vs push' cited as one of the driving forces behind the new directions we need to embrace. My own views are that while we are in the midst of such a major shift out of our previous (and in many cases still current) industrial age methods and thinking in education, it is easy to become lost in the descending 'fog' layers of new technology innovations. The greatest challenge for education leaders is not the technology but change management - perhaps this is where our focus for current and next generation education leader professional development is needed. Rather than this MOOC being themed so broadly around Change it could focus more specifically on Change Management and how to achieve this. I'd be very interested in your thoughts and the thoughts .... [Comment]
