#Change11 Why the sky is blue?
suifaijohnmak, Learner Weblog
I remember reading those books with the “ten thousand why?” when I was a boy. One of the questions that puzzled me was: Why the sky is blue? Here is an explanation of why the sky is blue in this … Continue reading → [Link]

Graphics that mean stuff
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
I came across the following graphic in this week's Change 11 topic, titled "Power Law of Participation"Now...don't get me wrong, I love visualizations as much as the next learner, but visualizations need to mean something. Even context-less they need to be somewhat decipherable and viewers need to be able to infer some meaning. This isn't the case with this image. What is this "Power Law"? What do the axes mean? What is .... [Link]

"Chance favours the connected mind"
George, EdTech - Insights
Looking around for resources to explain our Open Learning initiative in school, I came across Steven Johnson's video describing his book "Where Good Ideas Come From - the Natural History of Innovation".He ended with the comment that "chance favours the connected mind" - and his presentation illustrates the way that new ideas are generated (basically mash-ups of own and other ideas put together over time, discarded and improved). In a time of multiple (too many?) connection channels, the .... Highlights and Sticky Notes: It isn't possible or practical to try to control the quality of content and conversation that people publish online -- if it had been possible, there would be no web, no YouTube, no Wikipedia today -- but I contend that it is possible to increase the proportion of the population who know something about what they are doing when they consume or create digital culture.Although the word "literacy" traditionally refers to the skill of encoding and decoding .... Slow Learning with Clark Quinn

Ben, Great posting and an important question. I too really enjoy the MOOC experience, the responding to blogs that fires up my own thinking and the digging deeper into into subjects introduced here. Self-directed learning suits my sense of independence but it just occurred to me this afternoon (while loading a quiz into a course on our LMS) that the image of the hearty individual alone and so cleverly self-actualized learning their way through the MOOC jungle is a really very shallow approach to both the material and the presence of so many interesting people. I too would like to take my MOOCing past the level of mere interest. My engagement here is real and the experience is intellectually fulfilling but there still remains a detachment that's a bit like Alice being able to step back through the mirror into the "real world" with its real accountability. If virtual worlds are going to be places where many people get much of their education then it seems we need to build in .... [Comment]
