Week 12 - Clark Aldrich

This week we are delighted to be able to welcome Clark Aldrich, who will talk to us about advanced learning strategies and simulation design. #week12

There will be two live synchronous sessions in Elluminate:
- Wednesday, 12 noon Eastern - Check Time Zones
- Friday, 12 noon Eastern - Check Time Zones

In addition, we will be reading Clark Aldrich's book, Designing Sims the Clark Aldrich way.

Clark Aldrich is a global education thought leader, labeled a guru by Fortune Magazine and a maverick by CNN. He uses his real world experience in innovative educational experiences to produce insightful analysis and uncanny predictions, and the other way around.

Aldrich is the author of five books, Simulations and the Future of Learning, Learning By Doing, The Complete Guide to Simulations and Serious Games, Learning Online with Games, Simulations, and Virtual Worlds, and Unschooling Rules.

Aldrich's work has been featured in hundreds of sources, including CBS, ABC, The New York Times, Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, CNN, NPR, CNET, Business 2.0, BusinessWeek, and U.S. News and World Reports.

Previously, Aldrich was the founder and former director of research for Gartner’s e-learning coverage. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in Cognitive Science, and earlier in his career worked on special projects for Xerox's executive team.

Designing Sims
Educational simulations and serious games have gone from the province of a few rabid believers to a requirement of educational media. Still, the methodology is often misunderstood or applied ad hoc.

I have built a lot of educational simulations and serious games (collectively referred to as sims). Here are the various phases and stages through which most successful projects have gone. Clark Aldrtich, November 28, 2011 [Link] [Comment]

In every social relation where one person supports or helps or cures or teaches another person is a degree of dependency. The end of a supporting, curing or teaching relationship is difficult because this dependency has to change to independency, maturity, adulthood. In a MOOC are mature adult independent learners. Il tema affrontato nel corso dell’undicesima settimana di MOOC è «La natura delle tecnologie», facilitatore Jon Dron. Maybe the content will be filled later, maybe it's just a program entry and will never be fleshed out, but RSS readers like me will never know; we see nothing but the headlines (and sometimes not even that!) that leave only tantalizing glimpses. This is the case for an entry that came out today, How to Get the Most out of the .... Today's #change11 MOOC live session allowed us to hear from Jon Dron and his area of expertise - technologies. After a discussion on constraints, the conversation focused on the pedagogy of MOOCs.Activity in this MOOC has cooled, even though the topic under discussion generates interest and is a meta-concept that allows us to consider assemblies of technology, so it is of interest to educators (pedagogy is a technology), or should be.It seems that the drop-off is par for the course.
