The Speed of Tech: #owd11
Eric Duval,
Eric Duval's Weblog, November 17, 2011.
"I had the distinct pleasure and rather humbling honor of doing the opening keynote at De Onderwijsdagen (education days?) in Utrecht, NL. My talk was on learning analytics, a topic that is really booming, especially in The Netherlands… What struck me this morning is how technology has sped up how we interact and debate nowadays." This post has slides (in English) and video (in German) of the talk. [Comment]

“Who Does the Earth Think It Is?”
Tony Searl, Neoteny
Erik Duval's "Always On" interests me this week more than abundance. As fun as circuitous rhizomic metaphors were, I look forward to Erik's always on in practice. Hearing, seeing and thinking practitioners, like Erik sharing methodology from his "space", was immediately refreshing. Metaphors bricolaged and assigned portents unintended had rounded up the week. Vivid memories of Ken , impassioned with 1000's release, teaching an .... [Link]

Learning in a time of abundance #change11

I will admit to being very slack with my learning in the MOOC that I am undertaking entitled Change11. Everyday I check my email and sometimes I will think "Geez that is very academic and well above me" and other times I think "This is pointless to my context" The beauty of Change11 is the ability to 'dip in' and 'dip out' as you needed. There is no need to work through the course in .... [Link]

Comment to Erik Duval’s Learning in a time of abundance
jupidu, ZML Didaktik / Innovative Learning Scenarios
I’m only thinking ….. trying to focus my thoughts … around Erik Duval’s opening of week 10 in the change.mooc: … we are now more connected than ever before … we now live in a world of plenty, mostly as a consequence of Moore's law … our world is 'always on' When I was a [...] [Link]

A New Definition of Literacy in an Age of Abundance #change11
Andrew Neuendorf, Junct Blog
In response to Week 10 of ChangeMOOC, Paul Prinsloo writes about the proper response to our age of information abundance, focusing on what I think is an excellent definition of literacy:During George Siemens' recent visit to the University of South Africa, he defined literacy as (I hope I remember and quote him correctly...) "The ability to engage with and participate in the dominant discourses of the current age". If you cannot participate in and engage with the dominant and normative .... [Link]

Learning in an age/time of affluenza? #change11

My first reflection on Erik Duval's blog posting "Learning in a time of abundance" focused on situating the claim of 'a time of abundance' against the background of the state of permanent non-abundance and scarcity that large numbers of people … Continue reading → [Link]

Wikipedia 101, ctd. #change11
Andrew Neuendorf, Junct Blog
Seeta passed this Wikipedia-themed cartoon along. I need to add this to my Wikipedia 101 discussion. In many ways, the internet has taken the urban legend and launched it into hyper-speed. Sure, we still said things like "Santa Claus was invented by Coca-Cola" before the internet existed, but now the time from inception until general acceptance is much shorter. The cartoon also addresses the closed loop phenomenon, whereby false information posted online becomes its own "proof," showing, again, .... [Link]

We Need Teachers to Combat the Idiocracy! #change11
Andrew Neuendorf, Junct Blog
The movie Idiocracy, written and directed by Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, Office Space) is not very good. It plays the same note over and over again. However, despite being a comedic film, it's a mournful note, a minor chord that resonates with our perception that public discourse is dumb and getting dumber. It's a weak movie, but a great conversation piece. When an average American (played by Luke Wilson) wakes up 500 years into the future, he discovers endless mounds of .... [Link]
