Feature Article

David Wiley
Introductory essay by David Wiley for week05 summarizing his contribution to the field. He writes, "I would like to invite students to reflect on the practical impact on people they would like to their educational technology / educational research work to have. What kind of change do they want to see in the world? What will they have to do, personally, to create that change?"

Highlights and Sticky Notes:George Siemens (2010) has argued that academia should take ownership of the open education debate before it is hijacked, and given the above history, I would agree. The loss of ownership of some of these core academic functions occurred not because of the technology but rather because the scholarly community failed to engage with itcommercialisation of education did indeed occur, but not because academics went along with it unwittingly but because insufficient .... Highlights and Sticky Notes:Nicholas Carr's (2008) article 'Is Google Making Us Stupid?' struck a chord with many people. Carr's (2010) argument, which he fleshes out in his book The Shallows, is that our continual use of the net induces a superficiality to our behaviour. He says this is felt particularly when trying to read a complex piece:The issue of quality is perhaps more keenly felt when we consider teaching. I raised the idea of pedagogy of abundance in Chapter 8, .... [Link] Sun, 09 Oct 2011 21:29:30 -0000 [Comment]

Highlights and Sticky Notes:you have to do social media to get social media. Given that many senior managers and professors in universities are not people who are disposed towards using these tools, there is a lack of understanding about them at the level which is required to implement significant change in the institution.Tags: scholarshipby: Rob [Link] Sun, 09 Oct 2011 20:12:49 -0000 [Comment]

MOOC Discussion #change11
dmaclean2011, dmaclean2011
http://ht.ly/6RPWI Came across an interesting discussion (sorry, lost the original user on Twitter) about the connectivism MOOC, which raised many comments about the validity of moocs. Some people disagree with the concept, some are obviously entrenched academics with an axe to grind. Collective Learning Explained
George, Educational Technology - Insights
(#change11)This is Allison Littlejohn's presentation on Collective Learning, described in terms of her research of the use of this in an international company (with colleagues). This was not a topic that I initially had much interest in, but the MOOC has really thrown light on something I would not otherwise had considered. The model that Littlejohn describes (see previous post Tools for Collective Learning) shows that this is a discipline in development and she provides a credible model of .... Collective Learning and Expanding Knowledge Spaces
Paul Tracy, Getting (r)Smarter
Week four of the Change MOOC was about Collective Learning. It was moderated by Allison Littlejohn, Chair of Learning Technology at the Caledonian Academy of Scotland. This segment has been the best organized in this MOOC so far. Run from her personal website, Littlejohn made the effort of treating this as a traditional learning platform and gave the week some structure even providing assignments as tasks. The week focused on how we use collective knowledge to learn; particularly in the .... [Link] Sat, 08 Oct 2011 09:47:00 -0700 [Comment]

Well, what a conundrum, I feel that I have truly had a revolution, not Copernican but as substantial in its impact - looking at Connectivism, I have had an illuminating journey, and there is no doubt, one that was experiential as much as one based on theoretical reasoning.  I found the MOOC an exciting adventure, much of the time, depsite being lost contsantly, and swamped by the requirements of new networks, and forms of connecting, it was 'just .... Hi Marklink to the Mooc is here - http://change.mooc.ca/index.htmlI think over the last few weeks I have considered the point of you that you describe, and I feel it is changing. the academic community is in fact academic communities - there are peer reviewed journals online and the peer reviewing takes the form of active, real-time, visible discussion - I think it is richer for that, not least because of the visibility of it - the hidden, reified mystery of the journal is less and less .... I keep returning to to the connection between prior learning assessment methodologies and abundance of content. Abundant content is insufficient in creating the conditions for learning, but it does significantly change the ecology for learning. The notion that people design and engage in their own self-directed learning was well documented by Allen Tough in 1971 in his book Adult's Learning Projects: A Fresh Approach to Theory and Practice in Adult Learning.
