This my video presentation called ‘Distributed Learning’ from week 5 in CCK11: Week05 Insights: •We create a relevant online discussion when we post our reactions to other people’s points of view. These connections link their content to our perspectives and by sharing my understanding I increase my own capacity. It’s important to let your own [...] [Link]

Alexis Sanchez Connects 4 Goals: The Beautiful Game #ELTchat #CCK11 #ukedchat
profesorbaker, Profesorbaker's Blog
The beautiful game. That’s what they call football. The beautiful game. Rarely will a player play the beautiful game as beautifully as Alexis Sanchez did on Sunday. Alexis Sanchez, “El Niño Maravilla”, scored four goals. Let me repeat that: four … Continue reading → [Link]

First Impression
verozentella@gmail.com (Verónica Vázquez Zentella), Con sabor educativo
#CCK11Remember as a child your first day of school?Well, as teachers, we deal with the first day of school as well, and it happens to beimportant, and nerve-racking, because it is the first impression we make; like a seal, like a sticker, it’ll say what people think of us, how they perceive us. Doesn’t matter if you teach kindergarten or college, your students will get a first and indelible impression of you.I have always thought of the first day of school as the first time you go out with .... #CCK11 la strada verso la semplicità
serenaturri, serenaturri's Blog
[Link]

CCK11 Groups vs. Networks
deadvocate, Ken's World
I posted the following here: (at the bottom of a long thread) I’m still obsessing over this groups vs. networks thing, and this seems like a nice safe place to put my thoughts, no teacher figure about to slap my hands…. Ok, at 56:00 of the Feb 18 Elluminate session Stephen Downes presents his flip [...] [Link]

CCK11 The law of re-distribution
deadvocate, Ken's World
The power law operating in networks is an observation that autonomous, diverse social networks tend towards uneven distributions. This observation can be colloquially expressed as: Shirky’s Law: Freedom of Choice Makes Stars Inevitable The re-distribution law is an observation that the distribution in social networks is not static and is affected by the natality effect. This observation can [...] [Link]

CCK11 Introducing the law of re-distribution
deadvocate, Ken's World
From the ongoing discussion here: http://cck11.mooc.ca/post/54793 Hi Jennie and Al. I think these are very good subjects for debate. Should we push learning in a direction that is not natural, force learning to take place in a way that goes against its biological, economic or socio-mechanical proclivities, IF there is a natural tendency or power law [...] [Link]

CCK11 What is missing in Connectivism?
deadvocate, Ken's World
According to Downes: There is no entity called a ‘soul’ and commonly understood as some sort of non-corporeal self described by or explained by the theory of connectivism. In this connectivism is consistent with other scientific theories and domains, such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, etc. He has pinned connectivism to a number of philosophical positions: [...] [Link]

CCK11 Einstein Speaks on Theory!
deadvocate, Ken's World
Having some fun on John Mak’s blog channelling Einstein: “You see, at the time I was thinking this theory, I did not host any other theory. Other people hosted their various theories, and I did not feel welcome in them. Sometimes their hosting rules prohibited my inclusion, sometimes their hosting rules seemed silly, and I [...] [Link]

CCK11 The unique idea in Connectivism
deadvocate, Ken's World
I enjoyed the elluminate session today; I measure my ‘success’ in these sessions on whether I learned anything or not. Today’s success included learning through the chat box that Neil Selwyn has some papers available for reading. I’m going to have a look at his work a little more closely; I found his take on [...] [Link]

CCK11 Dialogue issues
deadvocate, Ken's World
Interesting dialogue on the CCK11 page about dialogue: http://cck11.mooc.ca/cgi-bin/page.cgi?post=54793 I posted this to the dialogue: Hmmm. So the emphasis on ‘distributed’ has the paradoxical effect of reducing the ‘openness’ of the course. In essence, this course requires a learner to participate in a specified manner, and does not address the learner’s stated needs/wants. How is [...] [Link]

CCK11 – Recipe for success?
deadvocate, Ken's World
So, let me get this straight…. a) Dump the Moodle forums, on the premise that they tend to ‘power law’ instantiations, in the sense that 20% of the participants write 80% of the forum posts (this is deemed to be ‘bad) b) Replace Moodle with Grasshopper forums, on the premise that the tendency will be towards [...] [Link]

Power Laws and CCK11
deadvocate, Ken's World
I have participated in several of the connectivist course offerings over the last couple of years and have been and remain critical of some of the ideas and theories espoused therein. I am trying to understand my antipathy for this thinking, after all, how important can it really be? There are many theories of learning and [...] [Link]

Learning Theories
alan, alQpr
In all of my efforts to participate in Connectivist MOOCS (#CritLit2010, #PLENK2010, #CCK11) I have run into a roadblock when discussion turned to “Learning Theories”. Perhaps conceitedly, I find it hard to believe that this is because I lack a theoretical bent or (god forbid!) a capacity for analysis, but I have found myself unable [...] [Link]

Joining the #CCK11 half-way through
glenyan, A Point of Connect
This post’s original title was “Joining the #CCK11 late”. After a quick reflection, I changed it because, from what I know, the spirit of the class (despite the set course dates) is that there no early, or late, or very much of an external structure to depend on. We create our own time-frames, learning and [...] [Link]

Understanding self-similarity: An example

Thinking of learning theory # cck11 Einstein or Toolkit.
jaapsoft2, connectiv
Jenny Mackness writes a little masterpiece about the discussion on connectivism being a learning theory. Education and learning and teaching is a very complex subject of study. Mostly because humans and their children are part of the subject. Sociology of education is studying this complexity. One view of a learning theory is: A learning theory [...] [Link]

Facebook: A Virtual Coffeehouse???
LeahGrrl,
1117 - CCK11 - Abdullah's Open Window, February 28, 2011.
I've had a bad experience with Facebook, which is why I closed my account last year and probably will not open a new one, even with your encouraging and optimistic ideas here. I do wish sometimes I could participate in the CCK group on Facebook, it seems active and engaged and I would like that. Yet it's quite unlikely I'll ever go back, even if it would be good in some ways. The difference between Facebook and a coffeehouse is that a coffeehouse doesn't constantly bombard you with silly surveys or offensive polls, steal and then sell your information, and then lock the door with you inside. It's extremely hard to actually leave the FB "cafe": last year it took me a week and I'm still not convinced I've done every one of the dozens of steps it takes to eliminate "me" there. I agree that FB can be an opportunity to connect, but when I weigh the true costs of the free service to me, it's not worth it. I think it's way more dangerous than a moodle-.... [Comment]
