Thanks, Stephen. This is my third attempt at MOOCing and your post is a great summary of the major impacts we feel when immersed in this new way of experiencing learning in a network. I also finally 'get it' about how discussion threads work now. Cheers! :) (Hits Today: 1390 Total: 1390)

Hi Stephen et al - I have not yet received any of the newsletters via email, despite setting (and re-setting) my subscription option to do so. Is anybody else having the same problem, or is it merely operator error on my behalf?
Cheers,
Andrew

Hiya Andrew - I've checked, you're subscribed ok, I'm sending, it appears you are not receiving. It may be that the newsletters are being filtered by your service provider.
One way you can test this is to set up an alternative email address (gmail, say) and change your email to that. You should receive the email in the new account. If so, that confirms that your email is being blocked by your host.

MOOCing – what a term! I rather like it. Shouldn't it be added to the wiktionary page??? (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Page)
Just a thought.

It's my 3rd go at being in a MOOC. Must say already feeling more confident, with the orientation week. Just came across an interesting quote " just because it's possible doesn't mean it's necessary" ( Sister Joan Chittester) which is going to be my mantra this go round. So much is possible but I'll be asking what is NECESSARY for my learning?

Intentar hacer.
English:
I just posted my thoughts about participating. Real power of onlinelearning is social and contextual.Study with me and 12 others from across the world. I would like to feel the collective intelligence. Great idea!!! . "People don't resist change. They resist being changed!
I think with you...

I don't like to participate in facebook or twitter. I prefer my Google+ account. Is there any solution for participation?

At times, I feel that we are just trying to play around with all these learning technologies that are bombarding us every microsecond. I wonder what life will be like 25 years from now. We will look back at this experience and just laugh at our primitive efforts. Nevertheless, I love this adventure.

A question came up recently on campus about Student Online Identity. So I want to put out to the community, what do you see as the role of the educator or institution regarding managing student online identity? This deals with students who are expected to take part in open online discussions (not in an LMS) and to create an open blog.
Just as a starting point, the questions that were raised were:
1) What about students who may be suffering from harassment, or who keep their online presence private to prevent potential physical harm (in the case of an abused spouse or someone being stalked)?
2) As the student is part of an official class, their comments can reflect badly on the institution. Do we need more than our institutional policy on ethics and civility?
3) Since students already have an open ID for campus (based on their name), can the university require the students to use that ID for class projects and online assignments? (this goes back to question 1).
4) How do you manage Student Privacy with requirements of a course with open access?
Any and all feedback is welcome. If you have sources, even better!
Thanks
