Week 29: Alec Couros - Understanding Digital Citizenship

This week week we are delighted to welcome Alec Couros, ICT Coordinator of the Faculty of Education, University of Regina. View his Wikispaces here and his weblog here. Alec is the author of numerous presentations and a hyperactive Twitter feed.

This week's live online session: Wednesday April 4 at 1pm SK time (currently Mountain) - 3pm Eastern (Check your time zone) The session will be held here in Blackboard Collaborate.

Overview: This week, I would like to lead a conversation around the the emerging concept of digital citizenship as it applies to learners and the role that educators and educational institutions must play in developing citizenry. I plan to lead participants from the previous and still prevalent 'cyber safety' focus in K12 schooling to more current participatory approaches now becoming common in schools. Major topics under digital citizenship that will be discussed include: information & media literacy, copyright/copyleft, network literacy, and identity. Read more here

What are the main differences among those MOOCs – Stanford’s AI, Couresa, Udacity, MobileMOOC, Connectivism and Connective Knowledge MOOC,  Change11 and DS106? Should we manage or lead in a MOOC? #change11 – Chi cerca trova
serenaturri, serenaturri's Blog
[Link] Sun, 01 Apr 2012 21:47:08 +0000 [Comment]

Week 27 in ChangeMOOC showed us what a Scholar in Residence gets up to. Antonio Vantaggiato shared the work he started as Scholar in Residence at New York University last summer. #Change11 #CCK12 Moving beyond Management and Leadership Part 2
suifaijohnmak, Learner Weblog
What is the difference between management and leadership? Management versus Leadership is well explained here. In times of change, transformational leadership seems to provide a superior solution in leading the group or team.  Transformational leaders seek to transform.  Transformational leadership could … Continue reading → [Link] Sat, 31 Mar 2012 23:26:55 +0000 [Comment]

Here I ponder how one could move beyond the management and leadership concept of learning in a non-hierarchical organisational setting such as networks or MOOC.  John Spencer says in this post I don’t want to manage my class: Leadership is messy. … Continue reading → [Link] Sat, 31 Mar 2012 00:52:36 +0000 [Comment]

Reconceptualizing the library #change11
onewheeljoe, learn, teach, repeat
I'll be blogging in response to a webinar series offered by connectedlearning.tv at the invitation of the National Writing Project's Digital Is. In this week's session, hosted again by Howard Rheingold, we heard from Buffy J. Hamilton, The Unquiet Librarian, who engaged in a discussion about libraries and learning spaces. Dr. David Preston's high school class "hung out" during the connectedlearning.tv webinar and asked a big question: "What OPENBLOCKdoesCLOSEBLOCK the .... Hey, AK, thanks for this. There seem to be fewer blog posts and comments/discusion threads in this mooc overall but I'm not sure the length of the course is solely to blame. I continue to see a lot more Twitter action in The Daily than in previous courses so maybe folks are opting for that platform out of convenience or preference or that's just 'where they already are' (nod to Jane Bozarth on that one). There are also several moocs happening simultaneously (#change11, #cck12, #ds106 and maybe others) so perhaps people's participation is divided among them. I'd like to think I'm part of the 'core' that was visibly active in this course, more so at certain times than others, and I haven't departed. I'm still here, just as interested and active and reflective as I was last fall. I don't think I'm alone in that regard, even if you don't always 'see' what I'm doing with what I learn here. Cheers :) [Comment]
