Of bow ties and MOOCs: a personal reflection (#change11)
opendistanceteachingandlearning, opendistanceteachingandlearning
This reflection is a strange bricolage of two non-related issues: learning to tie a bow tie (as a 53-year old) and reflecting on my experience of a Massive Open Online Course, MOOC). I did not grow up with bow ties. … Continue reading → [Link] Tue, 29 Nov 2011 12:25:32 +0000 [Comment]

Complexity and the philosophy of becoming #change11
jaapsoft2, connectiv
” The human subject is not really observing the world from a perspective outside existence. ”  Teachers tend to forget they are part of the class, teachers are part of the social structure of the school, together with students. “The observer is not a unified and coherent agent whose various faculties operate in concert to [...] [Link] Tue, 29 Nov 2011 10:42:57 +0000 [Comment]

Setup for the Live Presentation: Elluminate now seems to have become the tool of choice for live web conferences for this MOOC.  For one of the first times, there were no significant sound issues.  Extensive use of the whiteboard feature of Elluminate was central to this conference. Content: The content of this web conference is [...] [Link] Mon, 28 Nov 2011 14:52:08 +0000 [Comment]

Massive and Diverse
Glenyan, A Point of Contact
At x28′s new blog a recent post about Massiveness and Diversity stirred some thought processes in me. I wouldn’t quite call this a response to Matthias’ post, as he seems to be tackling the subject of Massiveness and Diversity with respect to how MOOCs have run up until now. My thoughts here are about what [...] [Link] Tue, 29 Nov 2011 02:44:46 +0000 [Comment]

#Change11 Stories and Games
suifaijohnmak, Learner Weblog
This week’s topic is about games and games design.  I am not a frequent game player, but do enjoy playing games.  How about games through stories? May I start with 3 stories that I learnt from my relative, who most generously … Continue reading → [Link] Tue, 29 Nov 2011 02:54:54 +0000 [Comment]

If you don’t like messy learning, don’t play in the snow
brainysmurf1234, Connecting the dots
Something about the word messy jumped off the page for me this morning and then I read this snipppet from Jon Dron on the use of hard and soft technologies to aggregate content in a mooc like #change11: “Because it is not easy, this will be demotivating and inefficient.” Wow, that scares me because I think he’s [...] [Link] Tue, 29 Nov 2011 00:25:24 +0000 [Comment]

More Dissonance: Reconciling Emergent Learning and Student Learning Outcomes Assessment
Tai, Tai MOOCing About
I am, in part, responsible for implementing outcomes assessment at my institution and I am increasingly convinced that we in higher education should value and encourage emergent learning, that learning that occurs in between the formal spaces. Hussey and Smith noted, "It is one of the ironies of the current context of higher education that monitoring and assurance systems should be generating veritable bureaucracies within institutions at the same time as policy has discovered, and is .... Using mLearning and MOOCs to understand chaos, emergence, and complexity in education
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
This paper seems to have made the rounds while I was away from blogging last week, but I thought it would be worthwhile  posting it on my blog just the same :-)The second paper of the MRT (mobiMOOC research team) is now available through the  International Review of Research in Online and Distance Learning (IRRODL) and is titled "Using mLearning and MOOCs to understand chaos, emergence, and complexity in education."  Here's the abstract:In this paper, we look at .... Who can be served by bridges to nowhere? #Change11
svmoose, Inside Irene Gould's head
I just read an interesting book: Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich. It was published in 1970 and it is the most interesting and engaging book (meaning I like it!) that I have read. And that is quite a statement for a book from 1970. (by the way, the title of this post comes from this [...] [Link] Mon, 28 Nov 2011 22:14:36 +0000 [Comment]

#change11 as emerging out of complex networks and MOOC
jaapsoft2, connectiv
A Mooc is a network of people, texts, connections, information, etc. Every person in the MOOC is part of networks, with persons, texts, information, etc. The Mooc and the other networks are connected. We could argue if a MOOC is only one network or a complexity of networks. (network of information, network of people, network [...] [Link] Mon, 28 Nov 2011 12:39:41 +0000 [Comment]

Mature and independent #change11
brainysmurf, 104 - connectiv, November 28, 2011.

These are great questions, Jaap! Thank you for writing down this continuum (in pen and on keyboard). It's the dependence aspect that has been grinding at me over the last few weeks. I'm not sure where we strike a balance between independence and connectivity (which almost implies dependence?) Must ponder further... :) [Comment]
