Engagement and Motivation in MOOCs
Stephen Downes, Stephen's Web, November 23, 2011.

In this presentation I look at the issues of engagement and motivation in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). I outline the development of MOOCs and some of the features that make them distinct from traditional courses. Then I look at some of the literature regarding online student engagement, and apply that with respect to MOOCs. I find that many traditional measures - such as counting attendance or page views - do not account for the sort of engagement we'd like to see, and is demonstrated for example in ds106. In addition, provision of the ability to determine one's own educational path or even to satisfy one's other motivations, may be necessary, but are not sufficient, to support motivation in MOOCs. In the end I consider the example of how motivation is created in gaming environments, and wonder whether MOOCs need challenges and the possibility of failure in order to stimulate student engagement. Adjacent chaos/anarchy/growth/domination/futures #change11
opendistanceteachingandlearning, opendistanceteachingandlearning
In this week's blog, Jon Dron explores the nature of technologies (#change11). He starts with an interesting (and crucial) definition: "All technologies are assemblies that orchestrate phenomena to some purpose (Arthur, 2009). They may consist of, use or embody tools … Continue reading → [Link] Wed, 23 Nov 2011 04:50:55 +0000 [Comment]

Rhizomatic Validation
Glenyan, A Point of Contact
I came across a surprising reference to the Rhizome last night in my Qualitative Research text. The author is describing someone’s Four Frames of Validation for research: The third, “rhizomatic” validation, pertains to the questioning proliferations, crossings, and overlaps without underlying structures or deeply rooted connections. The researcher also questions taxonomies, constructs, and interconnected networks [...] [Link] Wed, 23 Nov 2011 02:51:29 +0000 [Comment]

Soft & Hard Technologies...
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
This week in Change11 our host is Jon Dron (rhymes with Tron ;-) )and to topic is Soft technologies, hard technologies and everything in between. While reading the seed post I got a distinct mental image of Steve Job's voice reading Jon's initial post - it had a jobsian feel to it.The article is an interesting epistemological view of technology; technology being very broad by definition since pedagogy is also taken to be a technology. I honestly don't know what to make of this .... [Link] Tue, 22 Nov 2011 22:20:00 +0000 [Comment]

Deleuze and abundant information #change11
jaapsoft2, connectiv
I did receive a message about a work on Deleuze that made me read more about his view on philosophy. (look at the comment in the message for a better version). As I only have fuzzy goals for change11, I am happily turning to Deleuze for some time. It gives me the same feeling that [...] [Link] Tue, 22 Nov 2011 20:54:51 +0000 [Comment]

Mobile Learning - In Response to Zoraini Abas

Zoraini Abas presented his experience with Mobile Learning at Open University Malaysia. You can view more details of what he presented here: the University took some classes as a sample and had the professors/Tutors communicate via SMS with students upcoming assignments, test, and other course related information. Learning in a time of abundance - In Response to Erik Duval
umair, #change11
Erik Duval talked about the information revolution and how it impacts our learning, in his presentation. What he is talking about is a topic that forces people to really consider the implications of all the information and how we as humans filter it effectively. One example of how the information has caused issues for us as learners is that we need to double check our research. So if we were to google something and on one website, we read a fact, the second step is to find the exact fact on .... [Link] Tue, 22 Nov 2011 15:54:00 +0000 [Comment]

Siri Can't Read: The False Metaphysics of the Singularity Age #change11
Andrew Neuendorf, Junct Blog
Siri can't read.Google isn't thinking.Technology doesn't want anything. The internet doesn't connect humans.Networks don't learn.Technology is not good.Technology is not bad. These are all necessary corrections, given the anthropomorphic language used by techno-philosophers, those who conceive of the internet as a hive mind and are inclined to "Ask Google" something important. Today's philosophies of the future are built on three metaphysical assumptions from the .... [Link] 2011-11-22T06:56:00.001-06:00 [Comment]
