Adjunct Technology...or pay your adjuncts better :)
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
I was reading a post by Leahgrrl the other day titled Adjunct Technology, or why I can't figure out Blackboard. It was quite an interesting post, and not something completely foreign to me - I've read my fair share of adjunct posts on the Chronicle of Higher Ed, and Inside Higher Ed, as well as having known many adjuncts personally. This past week, while attending the Sloan-C annual conference (virtually) I saw a session on developing faculty, and one of the institutions (the name .... [Link]

Assessment #change11
jaapsoft2, connectiv
Why this intimate connection between learning and assessment? The connection has a heavy impact on learning. Some skills are not teached, just because it is too hard to assess these skills. Other skills are teached over and over because it is so easy to assess them. Of course the (standardized) instruments used to assess and [...] [Link]

Dave Cormier on Rhizomatic Learning- Change Week 9
asims7, Reflections on my MOOC experience
Rhizomatic learning is a metaphoric term assigned to the learning process as a Rhizome is the root function of a plant that spreads out underground, connecting and diverting endlessly. Learning in this way is supposed to lead to an intuitive grasp of the learning process and material. It is difficult to satisfactorily define, as Cormier sums up: "The problem with that, of course, is that the whole idea of rhizomatic learning is to acknowledge that learners come from different contexts, that .... Campus vs. Online: fighting in the family
AK, Multilitteratus Incognitus
Last week I was a virtual attendee at the annual Sloan-C conference. It was fun and educational enough to spend 3 days watching live streamed sessions, and a saturday catching up on some recorded ones. The recorded ones are not as fun since you don't have the twitter stream going :-) In any case, I was watching the session on State Perspectives on Online Education and it seemed to me that there still is tension between the online side of the house and the face-to-face education .... The fight for public space online and off
Mark Mcguire, Mark McGuire's Blog
“Last night I deleted my Facebook account.” So begins a message that Dave Winer published on his blog on Thursday, 10 November, 2011. I left a comment in response to his post, which I have pasted below. Facebook protests have mounted since recent changes to their “Privacy” policy. For many, like Dave Winer, this was the [...] [Link]

Information abundance and learning
jennymackness, Jenny Connected
Erik Duval's topic for Change MOOC this week was Learning in a Time of Abundance , which he equates to changes in connectedness (we can be more connected to people and information than ever before), openness and transparency (access and resources) and 'always on' (e.g. students access their online connections 24/7). See also – http://erikduval.wordpress.com/2011/11/13/change-11-learning-in-times-of-abundance/. [...] [Link]

#Learning in abundance #change11
svmoose, Inside Irene Gould's head
Missed the session yesterday…..too many other things to do It is a bit repetitive, this week for me. We have been talking so much about abundance and connectedness, that I am allowing myself to do other things this week, so I don’t lose my interest…. A few remarks: 1. The abundance is not the problem, [...] [Link]

Wikipedia 101 (Or why Wikpedia is a Stem Cell, not Cancer) #change11
Andrew Neuendorf, Junct Blog
Clive Thompson's Wired article, "Why Kids Can't Search," which I previously wrote about here, is worth revisiting for what it suggests about the skill sets we should be teaching students. In a sense, it is a call for certain elements of Connectivism. It also reminded me that educators spend way too much time decrying the information on the internet and not enough time teaching kids how to take advantage of it.As Thompson writes, the ability to use search engines critically is now an .... #change11 Thoughts on learning
Cathy, Cathy Anderson
I am feeling somewhat cynical about learning theories ..this certainly could be due to my lack of knowledge and background in research into learning theories, so when it gets down to it all I am just a cynic. I have spent years working with students who need remediation in basic skills such as writing, reading [...]
