Week 10: Eric Duval

This week we are pleased to welcome Eric Duval as our guest. Eric is a professor in the research unit on human-computer interaction, at the computer science department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. But what he does extends far beyond that:

- president of the ARIADNE Foundation
- chair of the IEEE LTSC working group on Learning Object Metadata
- a fellow of the AACE
- a member of ACM, and the IEEE computer society
- on the Editorial Review Board and the Executive Advisory Board of the International Journal on E-Learning
- on the Steering Committee and Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (TLT)
- on the board of editors of the Journal of Universal Computer Science
- a member of the informatics section of the Academia Europeae

In short, Eric Duval is one of the most influential voices in education technology today, and it is a delight to be able to welcome him to week10 of our course. [Comment]

Week 10: Erik Duval Learning in a time of abundance
The coming week, I will be ‘facilitating’ a #change 11 session on ‘learning in time of abundance' for week10

I put ‘facilitating’ between quotes, because I am not completely sure what will happen or what I’m supposed to do – kind of like what often happens to me in Real Life too … As in most courses I ‘teach’, I expect that I will be the one who learns most…

Eric Duval: Learning in Times of Abundance
What I mean with the term abundance is that, for most of us, we now live in a world of plenty, mostly as a consequence of Moore’s law and its many variations regarding processing power, memory capacity, network connections, etc.

Dave Cormier’s concept of Rhizomatic Learning comes from A Thousand Plateaus. Network and rhizome #change11
jaapsoft2, connectiv
How do network and rhizome relate, in my view? In the picture rhizome is underground, not visible for us. The rhizome connects in a hidden way the thousand things. Chinese philosophers use “1000 things” when they want to talk about the multitude of things without category or definition. Dave Cormier does not believe in facts. #Change11 Metaphors of learning and knowledge

I like to toss around ideas, thoughts, and explore about what metaphors mean. I was perhaps a bit too caustic (or cryptic, or esoteric....or one of those things I'm often accused of being) yesterday in my post on Rhizomatic Learning, and for the most part I find the theory to be fascinating and ideal. I do find, however, that starved rootstalks can't bounce back so quickly, and I'm not sure a flood will help. Likewise, perhaps some rootstalks actually need to be trimmed.
