Nancy White, Full Circle Associates, November 2, 2011.

Slides and discussion from Nancy White describing a "mish-mosh of ideas that relate to supporting communities of developers and related roles in the OSS space. I talked general, not OSS, but with the intent that the ideas were applicable. Slides are also below. I went out on a limb and had them start with the face co-drawing exercise from Johnnie Moore." Ashley, I Am One Of Those People!
As per normal, I was lying in bed checking out my Twitter stream last night at around 10:00pm. It is pretty sad that this is one of my bedtime routines. I troll my stream, bookmark anything of value on my Samsung Galaxy SII phone and generally settle in for the evening. Most of the stuff that I bookmark, I never use again. I just like having it in a spot that I know I can refer back to in the future. An blog post by Steve Wheeler came across my stream and I was intrigued but didn't pay .... Small things matter, because I am only a small human being. I cannot at once listen to a symphony, I only hear the music of this moment, the sounds of now. #change11 Reading Peter Lunenfeld

I have not had time, and will not have time until the New Year, to pay enough attention to the Change11 MOOC, but I'm lurking when I can. Something from a book I'm reading, The Secret War Between Downloading & Uploading by Peter Lunenfeld (2011), MIT Press, made me think of the MOOC audience (I read mostly for the soporific properties--it's not that I have time to read right now): Unfinish challenges authorial intent, on one side, and immutable meaning on the other. Self Assessment
brainysmurf, 228 - Teaching and Learning in Virtual Words, November 1, 2011.

I really resonate with your focus on participant-centred content. Since some of the early topics in #change11 were less relevant to my work and interests, I found it difficult to dive into the facilitator materials. Instead, I relied on the participants to do some of the digesting, synthesizing and repurposing for me. I guess in that way I was a "selfish consumer" (a nod to Jenny Mackness' great post on the selfish blogger). As I've noted elsewhere (sorry for the repetition), this is my third mooc. First was #PLENK2010 as a lurker and back channel participant. No online contributions of my own. Second was #CCK11, in which I was more active with my own reflections on SharePoint (internal to my workplace) but not ready to be visible online. This third one #change11 is my 'charm' in which I am on FB regularly, Twitter occasionally and blogging about once a week. This one definitely has more debate and disagreement, which I enjoy. Some of us are returning .... [Comment]

Synchronicity in MOOCs
brainysmurf, 106 - Multilitteratus Incognitus, November 1, 2011.

Thanks for raising these ideas. Personally, I find it's a matter of design, as Lisa M. Lane commented on your blog. Yesterday's #socialartist live session with Nancy White was rocking with interaction on the white board and the back channel throughout that hour and more of the same is promised for Friday, Nov.4. I LOVED IT and crave more. Our Friday live sessions in #CCK11 were great for this approach too. I am somewhat the opposite in that I almost never watch a recording of a live session that I've missed. It just doesn't have the immersive, interactive quality that the massive participation can have live, if designed that [Comment]

My Difficulties with Online Learning Environments
brainysmurf, 214 - Reflections on my MOOC experience, November 1, 2011.

I didn't see a way to reply directly on your blog but wanted to say congratulations on making time to post. Overwhelmed is a natural feeling inside a mooc. It will get better as you find your own way to filter, sort and synthesize what's here. I really liked your post because I just came back from five days of mandatory classroom training, which I haven't done in years. I nearly hated it. I didn't completely hate it because I met a few great people and the facilitators were very competent and I learned a few things. I just couldn't stand how passive it was compared to the way that I actively learn on the job and through this #change11 mooc and the other moocs I've been part of before. The classroom activities were "participant-centred" in that they were interactive but there was a sense of the "right" answer being in the hands of the instructors that we would somehow land on (or not). There was only one voice at a time (an instructor or a participant). .... [Comment]

Evaluations in MOOCs
brainysmurf, 106 - Multilitteratus Incognitus, November 1, 2011.

Lots to think about and tease apart here. If you want to know about the quality of the mooc itself, there are many ways to solicit feedback from participants about the content, objectives, facilitators and so on. If you want to know what the mooc did for people, the simple answer seems to be performance assessment. You mention designing a language mooc. In my opinion, the most appropriate assessment is whether the participants can speak/write/read the language to xxx proficiency level at some point before, during or after the mooc. I don't think any other type of assessment related to quality or quantity of participation has much value and would only serve other purposes and interests, as you noted. I also indicated "before, during and after the mooc" because a person coming into a mooc with some ability to speak the language may need less immersion to get to the desired level than someone who is starting from scratch. Formal language learning programs have been around .... [Comment]
