The 5 Cs: Consume, connect, create, contribute and commit!
brainysmurf1234, Connecting the dots
My fellow moocer AK shared an intriguing struggle in Do we need to know one another when sharing?  My response took shape as I reflected on my #collective5 task in #change11 I'm not sure that I need to know someone in order to connect, create or contribute beyond what [...] [Link] Tue, 11 Oct 2011 13:36:50 +0000 [Comment]

Opening statements on Open Content #change11
bioram, Change MOOC Reflections
The work of David Wiley as an innovator and advocate are impressive, especially his current work on open textbooks.  The expense of textbooks is a topic that is dear to my heart, for as a science educator, I see the burden placed on students.  I guess it is one of the reasons I provide all of the lab materials to the students free of charge.  Of course, this makes me consider about opening up this material as open content.I have yet to get through all of the sources .... David Wiley #change11 mooc week 5 – post 2

This week’s topic has inspired and energized me into revisiting notions I’ve had for a few years. Unfortunately, I’ve found that whenever I try to take them forward there is such inertia from within the institution that they never get … Continue reading → [Link] Tue, 11 Oct 2011 10:31:02 +0000 [Comment]

Collective learning for #change11
coachcarole, Baranduda Blog
As researchers, we need to fully understand collective learning processes, the factors that affect these, and the emergent nature of collective learning. As practitioners, we have to face the challenges around whether collective learning can be planned, structured, and managed. As learners, we have to understand the inter-relationships between individual and the collective. My recent [...] [Link] Tue, 11 Oct 2011 06:30:39 +0000 [Comment]

Understanding Reflection as Hunting Assumptions
rainbowhill, In Learning
I've been asked to reflect on my trajectory through higher education and to be honest, I've been having trouble with the overabundance of definitions for reflection. Words tend to use their power when they are overused, and I had come to believe that the word was used in the sense of a passive contemplation. I wasn't happy that reflection, in that sense, had any power to describe what I do in practice. Until yesterday. While attempting to track down the recommended text for my .... Wiley on Digital Learning Objects - the reusability paradox
George, Educational Technology - Insights
Back in 2009 I thought that Digital Learning Objects (DLO) would be the way forward. The idea of taking bits of excellent learning and reusing them in different learning tasks seemed attractive.David Wiley described DLOs as:A digital learning object is "any digital resource that can be reused to support learning......Additionally, learning objects are generally understood to be digital entities deliverable over the Internet, meaning that any number of people can access and use them .... Aprendizaje colectivo y abierto: ¿Discurso educativamente correcto o realidad?

Walking the Virtuous Middle Way | iterating toward openness

Highlights and Sticky Notes:We are learning that even what we once thought were true self-organizing systems rely heavily on "key, well-informed individuals altering their behavior according to their prior experience" to increase their efficiency.Self-organizing systems are tools.  See connection with my reading of John Dewey: must have a purpose in mind when using the many tools on the Internet, including MOOCS and self-organizing tools, or else it will be haphazard and not that helpful for .... Change in higher education
jolinfield, Jo at Linfield College
I’m participating in our campus Strategic Planning group and in the #change11 MOOC at the same time. Talk about cognitive dissonance! We have faculty who pound on the table and swear they are not luddites who insist that no change is needed and we should stay exactly the same or change in only insignificant ways. Binding force in collective learning, #change11, #collective
umair, #change11
The binding force can be various reasons for why one would want to learn in a group rather than by themselves. One can be they are working within an organization and it is good practice to work within groups and often forced. Another reason can be you have a common interest with other individuals and you want to connect with them to see what their experiences have been for that common interest. And obviously when you are with family, friends that you happen to be around, these groups share .... [Link] 2011-10-10T11:15:00.000-07:00 [Comment]

Collective Learning - Final Thoughts #change11
bioram, Change MOOC Reflections
After my epiphany regarding collective learning, I've taken a chance to rethink my views on the topic and Professor Littlejohn's work.  Due to meetings, I was unable to attend the presentation on Friday, and hope to view it later this week.First, collective knowledge is a reality.  No human holds the sum total of all knowledge, so we have to use external sources of knowledge to supplement our understanding of topics.  In the sciences, collective knowledge .... #change11 ~ MOOC Monday
Sue Hellman, Small Changes; BIG RETURNS
This week I started out by thinking about David Wiley's challenge to all Change.MOOCers to envision how our personal ideas about change and educational technology might be played out in the world at large. He urges us not to be content to keep our thoughts inside ourselves but to actualise them by dreaming BIGGER and pushing our vision for change out beyond its normal horizons. Then I came across this oh-so-short but eloquent piece from a Brazilian blogger. (Link to original -- .... [Link] Mon, 10 Oct 2011 07:52:00 -0700 [Comment]

Non-structured communities – “Lord of the Flies” or Utopia? #change11
svmoose, Inside Irene Gould's head
There has been some talking in the past few weeks about the benefits of non-structured communities. MOOC seems to be non-structured, although I must say it keeps me structured these days Has anyone actually ever lived in a non-structured community, even for as little as a week? I did. Children educating themselves #change11
svmoose, Inside Irene Gould's head
I’ve read a very interesting article (thanks to the person who put it up, I forgot his/her name) about a school where children basically figure out what they do during their school time. I was glad to read that the kids are doing well and have no trouble going to another school later on. What [...] [Link] Mon, 10 Oct 2011 12:39:15 +0000 [Comment]

The Teacher's Guide To Using Posterous Spaceshttp://www.downes.ca/post/56415Nice quick guide to the use of Posterous Spaces (to put into context, in the #change11 MOOC, after Blogger and WordPress, which numbered one and two, the next most popular participant contributions were on Posterous and Tumblr, a trend that seems to be accelerating; Posterous is a lot like Google+, but without all the constraints and limitations).
