Well, our live session yesterday didn't quite turn out as planned. At least not initially. If you joined us, you're aware that Big Blue Button (the synchronous tool we were planning to use in #change11) doesn't like many participants in the room at once. I think it took us about 8 minutes to crash the system.

However, after a period of frustration and irritation, Barry Dahl offered the use of his Fuze Meeting account. So, we had a session after all. The link is in the title of this post. Thanks for your patience on this. While we are experimenting with each open course we run, this experience was outside of the scope of experimentation and more in line with "well, that sucked". Anyway. we're getting there... [Comment]

I've taken on a gamble, signing up to take part in MOOC #change11 to get informed about education technology, blended online learning, sharing, connecting and other things. I'm still not sure what it's all about, but it seems to be - as far as I've managed to work out - an online virtual world of sharing ideas, resources, experiences and opportunities to change education. Convergence of Abundant Content and Prior Learning Assessment

As I have been reading various blogs and participating on some discussion boards, some ideas about open learning and higher education credentialing have begun to come together. I see the promise in open learning as reducing significant financial and location barriers and allowing broad access to learning resources, but how such learning could be assessed and credentialed is still fuzzy. This credentialing will need to be coupled with other services. Siemens recently opined, "What is valuable, .... [Link] Thu, 22 Sep 2011 01:51:00 +0000 [Comment]

Metaphors for a MOOC
Jennifer Sinclair, The MOOCow
Browsing through the stream of information, links and data attached to and associated with this MOOC, I noticed that some time is spent amongst participants discussing and trying to decide what a MOOC is. I havebeen thinking about it too and come up with the metaphor of an interactive library. Part of the learning in a MOOC or from a MOOC is figuring how to 'tame' a MOOC and manage it - deciding on a metaphor is one way that helps me tame it and manage it.Information overload is a .... Do MOOCs have a critical mass? « Jasmin Hamadeh on #change11
brainysmurf, 49 - Best content in change11 | Diigo - Groups, September 22, 2011.

This post invited me to hone in on the word *critical* - not in the sense of quantity but quality. I observe that moocs seem to attract participants who are critical by nature: of the status quo, of their personal learning journeys, of the traditional theories around learning. For me, the value I get repeatedly from moocs is the feeling of belonging among like-minded educators who are willing to be critical, to wander off the path and not be lemmings. Thank goodness these spaces and faces exist! I agree with Daniel's comment that a critical mass for me is > [Comment]

Who is the 21st century learner?
mymindbursts, 23 - rjh.goingeast.ca, September 22, 2011.

Who indeed is the 'digital scholar', an academic now an 'e-reader' in 'Enter Subject Specialisms Here'. Some answers are offered in Martin Weller's book 'The Digital Scholar'. My favoured observation post is to watch out for this slippery fish in the OU Student Blog Roll, more a stream of fish-fry commencing their online, 'electronically-enhanced' learning journey, than a mere list, more news feed, though refreshing from the perspective of the new, rather than the rehearsed and practises [Comment]

Does a MOOC need a needs analysis? #change11
kevin, 23 - rjh.goingeast.ca, September 20, 2011.

it is an interesting and vexed question, really ,when we want to share something to other ,we must know who are our potencial audiences and the what conditions under which the paticipant can join in the sharable activities.for example ,i in China can't access to the twitter, facebook, youtube and so on ,i as the leaner in this mooc,it is very difficulty in getting help from other channel such as twitter [Comment]

Hi, Rebecca. I feel your pain about not being able to go 'back' to the master list of blog posts to see others or make comments or to start new discussion threads without commenting on someone else's post first. I find myself having to open a lot of separate tabs (IE8) when I want to cross reference things. Also saw your post almost 'back to back' with Jasmin's (yours through mooc site and Jasmin's through daily newsletter) and thought you both might like to compare notes on engaging or not. https://jasminhamadehchange11.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/moocs-critical-mass/ Keep well and hope to see you in the webosphere. Just a first question about learning #change11
brainysmurf, 104 - connectiv, September 20, 2011.

Some insights from Jane Bozarth in her book Social media for trainers: techniques for enhancing and extending learning "Clark Quinn offers perhaps the best definition of 'learning': 'Learning encompasses retention and transfer of new information.' Regardless of how the information is gathered (for instance, from a trainer, from trial and error, from watching someone else), can the person remember the information, then make sense of it in context and apply it appropriately? The context of a problem – an opportunity to use the learning – triggers relevant associations with it...One challenge in supporting learning within an organization is that we so often don't realize when it's happening. Those who are learning don't always think of it as 'learning', nor do they always think of themselves as 'adult learners'. More often they call it 'solving a problem." "Helping learning and organizational leaders recognize that &.... [Comment]
