Week 10 - Net Pedagogy: The Role of the Educator

Dates: March 21 - March 28, 2011

How often do we read about the importance of teachers in education? It must be every day, it seems. We are told about "strong empirical evidence that teachers are the most important school-based determinant of student achievement" again and again. The problem with the educational system, it is argued, is that teachers need to be held accountable. The problem with focusing on the role of the teacher is that it misses the point. Though there may still be thousands of people employed today with the job title of "teacher" or "educator", it is misleading to suggests that all, or even most, aspects of providing an education should, or could, be placed into the hands of these individuals. With new technology, with new pedagogy, and especially from a connectivist perspective, the role - or roles - of the educator is changing dramatically.

We have ample evidence that a proportion of students do eventually “get it”. Emergence is one of the key concepts in network theory that most attracts me to the conversation. Power and authority, hmm, how does one tackle that subject? It’s a bit difficult to dream about total freedom. I continue to revel in Olaf Sporns' wonderful book about neural networks: Networks of the Brain. In Chapter 8: Dynamic Patterns in Spontaneous Neural Activity, Sporns examines the dominant model in brain studies that says brains are mainly structures for receiving, processing, and then responding to sensory impressions from outside the brain (eyes, ears, skin, etc.). Further Thoughts on the Challenge of Connectivism in the Workforce Learning Process #CCK11
BrainySmurf, 1118 - Communication, Learning and Coaching to Drive Behavioral and Organizational Change, March 18, 2011.

Thanks, Skip, this is so relevant to my own aha moments this week. First, I have access to WebEx and SharePoint and use both daily for "business learning". They are two of the best tools I've ever had access to in my workplace and have fundamentally changed how I work (for the better). Many of my WebEx sessions (comparable to Elluminate) start out spontaneous and unscripted, but allow me to add the visual component to working with a colleague at a distance on some document or presentation. I can take detailed notes live, I can draw and edit on the page, and we can come away from the session with something concrete to do next. Most of that work then lives and continues to grow on my SharePoint site collection, which is open to all employees. So I was facilitating the inaugural WebEx meeting of a group of adult learners this week who would be participating in a pilot exchange program through which a group from one business area would visit another group in-person, learn some ....
